Biography
Nabila Ayu Aviani (b. 2000) is an Indonesian artist whose practice is shaped by her upbringing in the United Arab Emirates. In 2023, she graduated with a BA in Fine Arts from the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) and currently, she is based in The Hague, Netherlands.
In her figurative paintings, Aviani depicts how identity and memory are constructed, reconstructed, and destabilised within society. The dynamic compositions in her work reveal the intricacies of human relationships, blurring the boundaries between the platonic, the romantic, and the sexual. Her work is provocative, hedonistic, and at times, even reminiscing. Rooted in feminism, Aviani's work challenges how femininity is presented in society. Her experiences as an immigrant and a third-culture kid play the most influential role in her work, which reflects upon the intimate joy, connection, and shared belonging shown in her paintings.
